That Buddhist saint
By listening to those at great heights, of great achievers, even insects want to imitate and reach the skies
Have
you all heard about Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and do you know what was he lovingly
called?
Yes, he was called as त्याग मल, because of his kind attitude of
keeping others' need before his own.
Just like him, there was a great Buddhist saint Nagarjuna who moved around
naked except for a loincloth, but strangely had a golden begging bowl which was
gifted to him by his disciple who was a king.
One
night, he was about to lie down to sleep among the debris of an ancient
monastery, when he spotted a thief, standing behind one of the columns, trying
to steal some ancient archaeological objects.
“Here take this”, said Nagarjuna, holding the golden begging bowl.
The thief eagerly grabbed the bowl and went away. In the morning he came back
with the bowl and told Nagarjuna - “When you had given me such an expensive
bowl, without having any second thoughts, it made me feel very poor. Please
teach me how to develop such kind of lighthearted detachment possible.”
Whenever
we listen or hear about any inspirational story, what do we do?
We start imitating it. In this case either we will start wearing a loincloth or
will give away a gold begging bowl just to show to the world how you live simply
but think high. This would just be imitation of the act and not drawing
inspiration from it. By wearing a loincloth, we show a sign of a simple person
who is not attached to external display of materialistic things. When we draw
inspiration from any person or action, we need not imitate the act but try to
implement the message behind that act. We could be wearing something else, but
the root of the inspiration would be the simplicity of the person and having
the potential and will power to give away things without having any second
thoughts.
Similarly, the act of giving away the golden bowl shows that the saint had very
little attachment with materialistic possessions. We need to take the
inspiration from these great achievers, become simple and original and try to
detach ourselves from materialism.
An inspiring message, described simply and beautifully!
